But\, at present we do not know whether differences among local environmental conditions has selected for animals with different sensitivities to stressors. Similarly we do not know whether responses to environmental stressors are phenotypically plastic\, allowing animals with broad physiological tolerances to be robust to environmental stress.  Blue mussels\, Mytilus edulis\, were collected from sites around Long Island Sound (LIS) to test whether mussels from more stressful environments are more resilient to the impacts of OA as larvae\, juveniles\, as well as across generations.  We found that mussels from different populations show different responses to OA in larval survivorship and juvenile growth.  Interestingly\, although there were differences among populations in some traits\, there was no effect of OA (e.g.\, time to metamorphosis\, shell structure\, thickness and breaking strength). Mussels reared for a second generation under OA stress indicates that in some cases robustness to OA stress was masked in the first generation but was revealed in the second generation.  As a whole\, these results suggest that there is variation in both genetic and phenotypically plastic robustness to OA stress in blue mussels. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing detailed information about this webinar and the system requirements. Please note that although the presentation does not begin until 1:00 PM ET\, the webinar will be available starting at 12:30 PM ET. \nIf you are unable to attend this webinar\, it will be recorded and made available on the NECAN website\, www.NECAN.org URL:https://frenchmanbaypartners.org/event/2019-necan-webinar/ CATEGORIES:Partners' Events END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20190907T080000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20190907T120000 DTSTAMP:20240329T033117 CREATED:20190816T155452Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190816T160006Z UID:5193-1567843200-1567857600@frenchmanbaypartners.org SUMMARY:Water quality\, stewardship\, and the health of Frenchman Bay DESCRIPTION:View Fullscreen\n  URL:https://frenchmanbaypartners.org/event/water-quality-stewardship-and-the-health-of-frenchman-bay/ LOCATION:Schoodic Institute\, Winter Harbor\, ME CATEGORIES:Frenchman Bay Partners Events,Partners' Events END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20190617 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20190619 DTSTAMP:20240329T033117 CREATED:20190530T194328Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190530T194328Z UID:5182-1560729600-1560902399@frenchmanbaypartners.org SUMMARY:Planning and Facilitating Collaborative Meetings DESCRIPTION:Harness the Power of the Solstice to Improve the Impact of Your Work on the Coast of Maine! Cosponsored by the Human Ecology Forum.\n\nThe Jordan River is host to both mussel and clam harvesting activities. These local aquaculture operations are susceptible to point-source pollution and freshwater runoff-induced closures\, which are inherently linked to the dynamics of the estuary. \nRoss’s work aims to characterize the circulation patterns in the estuary to identify the controls of material transport in this system. To understand how quickly tidal and subtidal currents move\, Dr. Ross uses a combination of in-situ collected\, analytical\, and numerical data. Her work helps improve understanding of the hydrodynamic conditions in the estuary and determine the implications of estuary dynamics on water quality. \nLauren Ross is an assistant professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Maine. She holds a B.S. in mathematics from the University of North Florida\, an M.S. in applied mathematics from San Diego State University\, and a Ph.D. in coastal and oceanographic engineering from the University of Florida. Her research involves collecting data from the field and using a variety of modeling techniques\, with sites ranging from the fjords of Chilean Patagonia to the hyper-turbid estuaries of Western Europe. \nThe Seminar on Climate Change 2019 speaker series encompasses researchers from a variety of disciplines to address anthropogenic and deep-time climate change. The series is a companion to the course Seminar on Climate Change\, taught by Earth-Scientist Dr. Sarah Hall\, and aims to expose students to a wide range of research and communication about climate change\, this year with a theme of water. The speaker series is sponsored by the Anne M. and Robert T. Bass Geoscience Chair Fund. The full list of speakers can be viewed here: https://www.coa.edu/shall/Geoscience/SCCSS_2019.html \nThe Human Ecology Forum\, which cosponsors this talk\, is a free\, weekly speaker series based on the work of the academic community\, which also draws on artists\, poets\, and political and religious leaders from around the world. Members of the public are invited to attend. \n\nContact Info:\nSara Löwgren URL:https://frenchmanbaypartners.org/event/quantifying-tidally-driven-transport-in-the-jordan-river-estuary/ LOCATION:McCormick Lecture Hall\, College of the Atlantic\, Bar Harbor\, ME END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20180505T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20180505T120000 DTSTAMP:20240329T033117 CREATED:20180223T181950Z LAST-MODIFIED:20180427T175737Z UID:5029-1525510800-1525521600@frenchmanbaypartners.org SUMMARY:Save the Date: Annual Meeting DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars! This meeting will be held at the DMR Augusta Office\, 32 Blossom Lane\, Room 118. \nAs you may know\, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife\, in conjunction with a broad spectrum of partner organizations\, has created a draft state wildlife action plan that is now posted on the department’s website and open for public comment. The Maine Dept. of Marine Resources (DMR) has been a partner during the plan development. \nMaine’s 2015 Wildlife Action Plan identifies practical and voluntary opportunities to conserve Maine’s most vulnerable fish and wildlife\, while emphasizing that landowner and public participation is essential for wildlife conservation. July 13 marked the beginning of a 30-day opportunity for Maine citizens to review the action plan and provide comment. You can view the document at www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/reports/MWAP2015.html. \nThe 2015 Action Plan has incorporated more marine species and habitats than the 2005 included. The plan is not a management or regulatory tool\, and is not intended as a DMR workplan. The species identified and potential conservation actions will provide an opportunity for agencies and groups to garner funding for research and investigations of marine species and habitats. \nStates must have an approved Wildlife Action Plan to be eligible to participate in the State Wildlife Grants (SWG) program\, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The USFWS approved Maine’s initial Wildlife Action Plan in the summer of 2005. Since then\, Maine has accomplished over 50 research\, management\, and conservation projects\, benefitting brook trout\, rare freshwater mussels\, dragonflies\, migrant birds such as Bicknell’s Thrush and Black-throated blue Warbler\, and globally rare species\, such as the Tomah mayfly. Puffins\, wood turtles\, Atlantic sturgeon\, little brown bats and bumble bees are also recognizable species that have benefitted from Maine’s Wildlife Action Plan. The state must submit the updated action plan to the USFWS by October 2015 for Maine to remain eligible for SWG funds. \nPLEASE NOTE: Part of this plan describes potential conservation actions that can guide research and investigations. We received constructive feedback from marine stakeholders during the June partner meeting\, and have since revised the majority of these conservation actions for marine habitats and species. The updated plan that is now available online provides these revised conservation actions. \nThe draft is a collaboration of 103 conservation partners — representatives from federal\, state\, local\, tribal\, and public organizations – who over the past 18 months have identified species and habitats in the greatest need of conservation\, the factors negatively impacting these species and their habitats\, and potential conservation opportunities that citizens\, partner organizations\, and agencies could undertake to address these issues. The partners completed their review in June\, and based upon their feedback\, partners prepared the first draft of the action plan. \nMaine’s 2015 Wildlife Action plan is not solely a plan for state agencies; rather\, it is a cooperative fish and wildlife conservation strategy for the entire state and all Maine’s citizens and visitors. Comments and suggestions from citizens will ensure that it reflects the values and priorities of Maine’s people. \nWe hope that you will be able to attend the meeting on Aug. 4. Please RSVP to me at Claire.Enterline@maine.gov. \nIf you are unable to attend\, feel free to contact me or another state wildlife plan partner with any questions\, and we encourage you to submit your comments to Submit your comments to Becky Orff at: becky.orff@maine.gov \nOR \nSWAP\nWildlife Division\nMaine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife\n284 State St. #41\nAugusta\, ME 04333 \nPlease include your: \nName\,\nAddress\, and\nPhone number or email address (so we can contact you if we have any questions)\nIf your comments represent the views of an organization\, agency\, or municipality\, please include that information as well.
