Green Infrastructure is a network of natural areas that benefits nature and people.  The green infrastructure approach to planning helps communities balance environmental and economic goals.

This course led by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Service Center training staff will introduce participants to the fundamental green infrastructure concepts that play a critical role in making communities more resilient to natural hazards. Through lectures featuring examples from Maine, group discussions and exercises — participants will learn what they can do to support green infrastructure network design for resiliency from natural hazards.

Session Objectives:

• Participants become familiar with green infrastructure terms and concepts
• Participants understand the ecological, economic, and societal benefits of green infrastructure
• Participants understand the wide variety of contexts and scales of approaches referred to as green infrastructure today
• Participants identify new or existing planning processes suitable for integrating green infrastructure concepts and techniques
• Participants consider strategies for communicating the resilience benefits of green infrastructure to a broad range of stakeholders
• Participants know about local green infrastructure activities and experts with additional information and resources

Who should attend

planners, public works officials, conservation commission and planning board members, harbor committees, land trust members and others interested in decision-making related to increasing coastal resilience.

Continuing Education Credits

• Six hours of certification maintenance credits for this course have been approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
• Five core continuing education credits have been approved for certified floodplain managers.
