The Down East Research and Education Network’s CONVERGENCE 2014.
Land and Water: the Conservation Connection.
Keynote Talk: Landscape scale conservation at work Down East and across Maine
Alan Hutchinson, Executive Director, Forest Society of Maine
Alan has been the executive director of the Forest Society of Maine since 1997. Focused on conserving large tracts within Maine’s working forest landscape, the Forest Society of Maine has helped conserve 1,000,000 acres including several projects in Down East Maine. Bringing people with diverse interests together for large scale conservation projects is what excites Alan about this work.
Other Topics include:
Coastal Acidification
River Restoration Ecology
Climate Change Vulnerability
Eelgrass and Bay Ecosystems
Groundfish and Diadromous Fish Ecology
Seabirds as Indicators of Ecosystem Change

Plan to join DEREN for its fourth annual conference dedicated to strengthening and promoting conservation collaborations in Down East Maine. CONVERGENCE serves as the annual networking meeting of conservation professionals, educators, researchers, and managers in eastern Maine.
Together Hancock and Washington Counties have 200,000 acres of ponds and lakes, 3,300 miles of streams, 1,000 river miles, 2,245 miles of near-shore marine habitat, and 2,700 sq mi of forest cover. The region is also home to eight significant watersheds which support Atlantic salmon and 10 other migratory fish species. It is bordered on the west by the Penobscot River, which is the state’s largest and New England’s second largest watershed, and on the east by the St Croix River International Waterway. This year’s CONVERGENCE will focus on science-based conservation as an effective tool for protecting our valuable aquatic ecosystems.
